About us

The Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP works on innovative solutions in the fields of vacuum coating, surface treatment as well as organic semiconductors. The core competences electron beam technology, sputtering and plasma-activated deposition, high-rate PECVD as well as technologies for the organic electronics and IC/system design provide a basis for these activities.

Thus, Fraunhofer FEP offers a wide range of possibilities for research, development and pilot production, especially for the processing, sterilization, structuring and refining of surfaces as well as OLED microdisplays, organic and inorganic sensors, optical filters and flexible OLED lighting. Our aim is to seize the innovation potential of the electron beam, plasma technology and organic electronics for new production processes and devices and to make it available for our customers.



Products and services

Fraunhofer FEP presents OLED microdisplays with new specifications that offer new applications (ultralow power display, large area microdisplay) and flexible OLEDs which can be produced on a variety of substrates and can be tailored to meet the customers’ special needs.
Ultra-low power OLED microdisplay

Ultra-low power OLED microdisplay

Fraunhofer FEP has developped a novel microdisplay with an extremely low power consumption and simplified driving electronics. Basic idea for the reduction of the power consumption is the minimization of the necessary data transfer and the elimination of the normally needed refreshing cycles within the display. Compared to microdisplays for video applications, the typical power consumption of 200 mW could be reduced to 2 – 3 mW. Evaluation kits are available.

LOMID – Large area OLED microdisplays

LOMID – Large area OLED microdisplays

These displays provide outstanding picture quality, achieve a resolution of extended full HD (1920 x 1200 pixels) and pave the way for VR glasses in a compact format. Diagonal screen size is about 1” and frame rate around 120 fps. A special system concept and modern design methodology help to reduce power consumption. This OLED microdisplay was developed in the LOMID project (“Large-Area Cost–Efficient OLED Microdisplays and Their Application”, grant agreement no. 644101, www.lomid.eu).

Flexible OLED on a variety of substrates

Flexible OLED on a variety of substrates

Flexible OLEDs possess unique properties and features, such as segmentation ability, transparency, hybrid colors and patterns. The substrate can vary: stainless steel, ultra-thin glass, plastic web or other materials. Fraunhofer FEP has long lasting experience, technological knowhow and numerous facilities as well as a clean room for the development and processing of OLED on flexible substrates. We develop and process flexible OLED modules in sheet-to-sheet as well as in roll-to-roll technology.
