Fraunhofer IPMS is specialized in the development of OLED microdisplays for AR and VR glasses, other wearables as well as for the use in sensor applications. The concept and the parameters of the display like resolution, pixel size and embedded functions can be varied in a wide range appropriate to the project specifications or customers needs. The spectrum ranges from ultra-low-power displays for small and lightweight data glasses over high resolution HD displays for VR headsets and viewfinders up to bidirectional displays with embedded image sensor functionality.

Fraunhofer IPMS offers a selection of evaluation kits for a straightforward transfer of the microdisplays into customer-specific applications.

During SID 2024, we will present latest microdisplay solutions from semi-transparent up to our latest ones realized in 28nm technology with smallest pixel sizes of 2.5 micrometers.

OLED microdisplay with 10,000 dpi in 28 nm technology

OLED microdisplays have so far been developed predominantly on 200mm wafers. The conventional CMOS technologies and backplane design limit the number and size of pixels until now. Fraunhofer FEP realized OLED microdisplays in a 28-nm backplane technology on 300mm wafers. Components with a display diagonal of 0.18” and pixel sizes of only 2.5 µm have been manufactured. This corresponds to a pixel density of 10,000 dpi – an as-yet unattained level in the global OLED microdisplay market.

720p OLED microdisplays for AR applications and wearables

The 720p microdisplays were specially developed for use in industrial AR glasses. High frame rates and contrast ratios combined with low power consumption play an important role here. With a resolution of 1280 × 720 pixels, a screen diagonal of 0.64 inches and a pixel pitch of 11 μm, the 720p microdisplay offers high-quality images with low power consumption of 160 mW at 120 Hz, for example. Evaluation kits are available.
